What we do

At the heart of every Free Cakes for Kids group are individual birthday cakes. Put simply, a local group matches up two parties: families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child and passionate bakers who enjoy making themed cakes in their private kitchens.

In addition, many groups have developed further activities from community baking sessions to charity cake sales.

Birthday cakes for kids

Free Cakes for Kids bakers help families provide a birthday cake for their child. The cakes are homemade by volunteers from the community and often accommodate the child’s favourite theme or style. Recent examples include Princess cakes, Bob-the-Builder cakes, rocket-shaped cakes, the ever-popular football cakes or even a cake shaped like an enormous Lego™ brick.

Families can call themselves or are referred to local groups by a partnering organisation. Most local groups have built strong networks in their communities and work closely with organisations like the Young Carers, foodbanks or social services. This is what usually happens:

What difference does a cake make?

Everybody likes cake, but birthday cakes are something special. Having an impressive cake made only for yourself makes you feel special and appreciated. Plus, you have something to share with your friends when they come over for a party.

But there is even more. By arranging the birthday cake, bakers and families work together closely and form relationships which can last longer than a birthday. Many groups have built close ties in their communities and have become integral parts of the social infrastructure. In other words, there are many ways to make a difference – one cake at a time.

They organise cake sales for local charities, design celebration cakes for children centres or set up hands-on community baking sessions for clubs, schools and everyone who wants to learn more about baking.
